We spoke with Xcerion back in April 2007 about XIOS, its forthcoming “Internet OS” that provides a mock desktop environment in a browser that users can sign into from any Internet-connected computer. Now that XIOS has launched in a private beta, we’ve had the chance to get hands-on with the OS to see just how useful computing in the cloud can be. XIOS/3 doesn’t just talk about the Model-View-Controller design pattern as a guiding philosophy to achieve code integrity and reusability.
Sure, but trying to gain traction in a decades-old industry built on desktop power and integration is going to be a steep uphill battle at best. User interface design is never easy, but copying and pasting the desktop OS paradigm into a Web-based environment doesn’t seem to be the solution. The constraints of the browser and web technologies could inform Xcerion’s decisions a little more, creating a more usable application better suited to its environment. Initially we were intrigued by what Xcerion has accomplished with XIOS. A desktop environment replicated so completely in a browser is impressive in and of itself, but the wonder quickly begins to fade away once it’s time to actually get to work.

Does XIOS/3 applications work on any device?
